The weather’s finally starting to get nice! That means it’s the perfect time to start seeing flowers bloom. It’s considered the golden time for your landscape, which means that it’s the perfect time to refresh your flower beds. Below are some recommendations for flowers that thrive in the Memphis climate–and will thrive on your lawn.

What Makes the Best Landscaping Flowers? (In Our Experience)

We’ve been landscapers in East Memphis for years now, so we’re familiar with the weather patterns and the qualities flowers need to thrive. Throughout the seasons, our area sees both high temperatures and cold storms. The plant hardiness index ranges from 7b to 8a, which incorporates both perennials that can weather deep freezes and annuals that soak up the summer sun.

Our Flower Recommendations

Below are some common, beautiful flowers that you might have seen in the landscaping projects of your neighbors. All of them are hearty enough to last through a variety of weather patterns, especially the warm summers when they bloom.

Coneflower

These flowers are very heat and drought-tolerant, which makes them perfect for the summer when they sprout. Hearty and strong, these are also pollinators that can provide a natural boost to surrounding flowers on your lawn.

Daylilies

Daylilies bloom in the late spring to midsummer, depending on type, so it’s not too late to plant them this season! They come in a wide range of orange and yellow hues, depending on your preference.

Cosmos

Not only do cosmos come in a wide variety of colors, but they can also handle a wide variety of climate conditions. It makes them a landscaping favorite for practical reasons as well as their beauty.

Marigolds

Marigolds last long into the autumn, which makes them a beautiful choice for your front or back yard.

Unique Regional Options for Flowers

It’s pretty likely you’ve seen the plants above in landscaping projects, which makes sense with their resilience and beauty. However, if you want a summer boost with a unique landscaping choice, you should consider the two flowers below alongside some staples.

Butterfly Pea

This is a unique flower you might have heard of being utilized in drinks like teas or cocktails. However, it’s also a beautiful flower for the summer and fall seasons. Its vines make it a great option for a trellis, if you want a mix-up from traditional roses. The genus Clitoria mariana can grow in zones as low as 5, meaning that though it requires heat and direct sunlight, it can still thrive on a trellis in Memphis.

Though these pretty flowers will die off by winter, as they’re not frost-resistant, the flowers are edible and produce a beautiful, natural blue dye. If you’re looking for a landscape that can also provide gardening benefits, Butterfly Pea is a great flower to consider.

Salvia

Salvia is a more adaptable and hearty option for a unique flower. Their unique rod shape makes them a great pairing with a variety of other kinds of flowers. Many varieties like Salvia azurea are great natural pollinators as well. While they aren’t a name that people think of often, you might find that now you know what they look like, you’ll see them in landscaping projects more often!
